Although Purling’s obituary and cemetery records indicate that he was born on 15 March 1767 and his son John stated that he had seen Purling’s baptism record in Norfolk, when Purling applied for citizenship in the United States, he gave his year of birth as 1773. This age, 77, is recorded in the 1850 US census. The only baptism record found is one for Pallern (sic) Plane in 1794 in Hindolveston, near Wood Norton.
